When the Kids Were Young

Some of my most cherished July 4th memories come from the years when my kids were young and summer felt endless. We’d gather with family, friends, and neighbors in the warmth of the afternoon, grilling, swimming, and sharing stories while the scent of barbecue filled the air.

As dusk settled in, the real magic began. Sparklers were handed out, and the kids, wide-eyed and ready,lined up along homemade benches I built from wooden crates and 2x4s, proudly repurposed from their sports teams. We’d light fireworks at the end of the driveway, our small-scale show no match for the big city displays, but what we lacked in spectacle, we made up for in heart. The kids weren't just watching. They were part of the celebration.

Ice Cream Traditions

We always ended the evening with ice cream, a sweet tradition that’s still one of my favorite indulgences. Meanwhile, our two golden retrievers, never fans of loud noises or flashing lights, would quietly retreat to upstairs bedrooms or hide in the back of closets, finding comfort far from the festivities. 

Looking back, it wasn’t just the fireworks that lit up those nights, it was the kids’ excitement, and their pure joy that spread to the rest of us. Their laughter made everything more vibrant. We lived in a cul-de-sac, and on that night, the neighborhood would transform. Every house contributed to the bright chaos, turning the block into a combination of color, sound, and community; so loud and lively that no car could pass through.

Those moments remind me that the most memorable celebrations aren’t always the biggest, they’re the ones filled with connection, creativity, and the joy of being together.
